Conficker Worm: Help Protect Windows from Conficker

This page is designed to provide IT Pro customers the information they need to help protect their systems from the Conficker Worm, or to recover systems that have been infected. About Conficker On October 23, 2008, Microsoft released a critical security update, MS08-067, to resolve a vulnerability in the Server service of Windows that, at the time of release, was facing targeted, limited attack. The vulnerability could allow an anonymous attacker to successfully take full control of a vulnerable system through a network-based attack, the sort of vectors typically associated with network “worms.” Since the release of MS08-067, the Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC) has identified the following variants of Win32/Conficker: Worm:Win32/Conficker.A: identified by the MMPC on November 21, 2008 Worm:Win32/Conficker.B: identified by the MMPC on December 29, 2008 Worm:Win32/Conficker.C: identified by the MMPC on February 20, 2009* Worm:Win32/Conficker.D: identified by the MMPC on March 4, 2009**   *Also known as Conficker B++   **Also known as Conficker.C and Downadup.C What Happens on April 1, 2009? Systems infected with the latest version of Conficker will begin to use a new algorithm to determine what domains to contact. Microsoft has not identified any other actions scheduled to take place on April 1, 2009. It is possible that systems with the latest version of Conficker may be updated with a newer version of Conficker on April 1 by contacting domains on the new domain list. However, these systems could be updated on any date before or after April 1 as well using the “peer-to-peer” updating channel in the latest version of Conficker. Protecting PCs from Conficker Apply the security update associated with MS08-067. View the security bulletin for more information about the vulnerability, affected software, detection and deployment tools and guidance, and security update deployment information. Make sure you are running up-to-date antivirus software from a trusted vendor, such as Microsoft’s Forefront Client Security or Windows Live OneCare. Antivirus software may also be obtained from trusted third parties such as the members of the Virus Information Alliance. Check for updated protections for security software or devices, such as antivirus, network-based intrusion detection systems, or host-based intrusion prevention systems. The Microsoft Active Protection Program (MAPP) provides partners with early access to Microsoft vulnerability information. For a list of partners and links to their active protections, please visit the MAPP Partners page. Isolate legacy systems using the methods outlined in the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 98 Threat Mitigation Guide. Implement strong passwords as outlined in the Creating a Strong Password Policy whitepaper. Disable the AutoPlay feature through the registry or using Group Policies as discussed in Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 967715. Microsoft released Security Advisory 967940 to notify users that the updates to allow users to disable AutoPlay/AutoRun capabilities have been deployed via automatic updating channels. NOTE: Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 customers must deploy the update associated with Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 967715 to be able to successfully disable the AutoRun feature. Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 customers must deploy the security update associated with Microsoft Security Bulletin MS08-038 to be able to successfully disable the AutoRun feature. Cleaning Systems of Conficker Manually download the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) onto uninfected PCs and deploy to infected PCs to clean infected systems. Conficker Timeline On November 21, 2008, the MMPC identified Worm:Win32/Conficker.A. This worm seeks to propagate itself by exploiting the vulnerability addressed in MS08-067 through network-based attacks. The MMPC added signatures and detection to Microsoft Forefront, Microsoft OneCare, and the Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner on the same day. On November 25, 2008, the MMPC communicated information about Worm:Win32/Conficker.A through their weblog. On December 29, 2008, the MMPC identified the second variant, Worm:Win32/Conficker.B, and added signatures and detection to Microsoft Forefront, Microsoft OneCare, and the Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner on the same day. NOTE: Worm:Win32/Conficker.B can be successful against systems that have applied the security update associated with MS08-067. On December 31, 2008, the MMPC communicated information about Worm:Win32/Conficker.B through their weblog. On January 13, 2009, the MMPC included the ability to remove both Worm:Win32/Conficker.A and Worm:Win32/Conficker.B in the January 2009 release of the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and communicated information about this through their weblog. On January 22, 2009, the MMPC provided consolidated technical information about Worm:Win32/Conficker.B on their weblog. On February 12, 2009, the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC) released information about domains that Conficker-infected systems try to connect to. Microsoft also announced information on a partnership with technology industry and academic leaders designed to disable domains targeted by Conficker. On February 12, 2009, Microsoft announced a U.S. $250,000 reward for information that results in the arrest and conviction of those responsible for illegally launching the Conficker malicious code on the Internet. Microsoft’s reward offer stems from the company’s recognition that the Conficker worm is a criminal attack. Microsoft wants to help the authorities catch the criminals responsible for it. Residents of any country are eligible for the reward, in accordance with the laws of that country, because Internet viruses affect the Internet community worldwide. On February 20, 2009, the MMPC provided technical information about Worm:Win32/Conficker.C on their weblog. On March 27, 2009, the MMPC provided more details about the new P2P functionality in Worm:Win32/Conficker.D on their weblog.

     Rupert Alexander Lloyd Grint was born in Hertfordshire, England on August 24, 1988. Rupert is the eldest child of Jo and Nigel Grint and he has four siblings: one brother, James and three sisters, Georgina , Samantha and Charlotte. When Rupert isn’t filming or in school, he plays golf, football (soccer), PlayStation, guitar, rides his unicycle and his bike. His favorite sports is football. Rupert also likes drawing and arts is one of his favorite subjects in school. He has also stated, that if he’s not going to be an actor, he would like to have a career somehow related to arts. At the moment, Rupert is attending to all boys -school in his hometown and is currently taking his CGSE exams (that’s the reason why Rupert hasn’t been in so many TV programs as Daniel and Emma have lately).

     Rupert had only acted in one school play before he got his first change to act in a movie. He had read J.K. Rowling’s magical wizard series, Harry Potter, and he had always had one favorite character: Ron Weasley. Rupert has many times said, that he felt somehow related to Ron; he thought that there were many similarities between him and Ron. So when Rupert heard, that they were going to make a movie of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone, he definitely wanted to be in it. He send in an image of himself and waited. After he received no answer, he decided to show them how much he really wanted the part. Rupert made an audition tape first performing as his drama teacher (who happened to be a woman) and finally came up with a rap song that promoted the character he was auditioning for, Ronald Weasley. Rupert was then called to audition for the role. After several auditions, he was called to David Heyman’s office and sat down with a girl called Emma Watson. They were then told, that they had been cast to play the roles of Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Rupert’s first thought was ‘cool.’

     After the release of ?Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone? in 2001 Rupert became known all over the world. He had proved himself one of the most recognized actors on the big screen. His performance was probably the most liked of all trio in the first movie as well as in the second. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was released in 2002 and Rupert returned to screen as Ron Weasley. Rupert also, unlike Emma and Daniel, appeared in totally a film totally different from Harry Potter. Thunderpants was released in 2002 a bit before the Chamber of Secrets.

   Like his co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, Rupert made several TV appearances after the release of the second Potter movies. He visited many talk shows and other events, talking about making Harry Potter and how has his life changed. It seems, though, that Rupert is the one of the trio who gets least publicity.

   In June 2004, the third Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was released. It became a huge hit, even bigger than the two movies before it. The trio, Daniel, Rupert and Emma returned to film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which was released on November 5, 2005. During this time, Rupert decided to step away from Harry Potter and do a comedy film with director, Jeremy Brock. The film is called Driving Lessons and Rupert plays a shy boy named Ben.    Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born in Paris,France on April 15, 1990. She was the first child of Jacqueline and Chris Watson who both are lawyers. Emma’s little brother Alex was born three years later. Her parents got divorced few years after Alex’s birth and now Emma lives with her mother and younger brother in Oxford.

     In September 1995, Emma attended Lynam’s, the pre prep of Dragon School. She moved in September of 1998 to the Dragon School. While she’s not filming, Emma enjoys playing hockey and dancing most of all. She has said, that the biggest difference between Hermione and her is that she’s far more athletic than Hermione. She also enjoys debating.

   At school, Emma took part in several plays, most of the time playing the lead role. Plays in which she starred where such as ‘Arthur: The Young Years’ and ‘The Happy Prince’. Instead of just starring in school plays she took part also in many other school productions and events, like the Daisy Pratt Poetry Competition, in which she won the first place for her year at age seven.

With more publicly than ever, Emma decided to stick with the Harry Potter series. She signed to play Hermione again in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix which started filming in February 2006. The film is set to be released on July 11, 2007 in the United States and United Kingdom.

    Shortly after wrapping up promotions for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Emma announced that she will be taking part in a BBC One movie special. Emma plays Pauline Fossil (the eldest of three orphaned sisters) in Ballet Shoes. The movie is set to be released sometime near the end of 2007. In this production, it is said that Emma will be doing some dancing for her role. Emma speaks about her character, “I loved Pauline from the start, she makes mistakes and comes across badly at times but I really felt as though I understood her. I share a lot of Pauline’s passions and insecurities.”

   Daniel Jacob Radcliffe was born in England on July 23, 1989. He is the only child of Alan Radcliffe and Marcia Gresham. Daniel lives with his parents in Fulham, London and he attends to all-boys private school in London. Daniel enjoys playing pranks and being with his friends. He has earned 6 million pounds so far portraying Harry Potter, making him the second richest teenage in Britain behind Prince Harry’s 14 million pounds. He has stated, that he really doesn’t care about the money and basically all he buys with the money is CDs. Dan says that he loves music and especially he likes rock and punk.

   Daniel Radcliffe had had a passion for acting since he was just a 5-year-old child. His parents weren’t thrilled of the idea and they did not encourage Daniel to go for movie roles. He’s first acting role, however, came in 1999 when Daniel was cast as young David Copperfield in ‘David Copperfield’ and he starred along side Dame Maggie Smith and Bob Hoskins.    The Harry Potter movies aren’t slowing down. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire quickly climbed to the top of the movie charts. Dan’s acting skills improved greatly. After filming stopped for GoF, Dan was already planning his next move! He signed to play the eldest of a group of orphan boys.      Daniel Radcliffe took part in a play called Equus. Daniel plays the character of troubled teenager named Alan Strang. This was one of Daniel’s most amazing works other than the Harry Potter series because he believed that it really pushed him as an actor. The play also attracted a lot of press because Daniel had a scene where he would be naked.

     Expanding his acting career, Daniel took part in another film called December Boys. The film is based on Michael Noonan’s novel and focuses on four orphans who leave their orphanage for a holiday by the sea. December Boys is released in September of 2007.

   Just after filming finished for December Boys in January 2006, Dan returned to the glasses. Dan has stated many times that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is one of his favorites out of the series. He is looking forward to the kissing scene with Katie Leung (Cho Chang). The fifth installment’s release date is July 11, 2007! Daniel Radcliffe has officially agreed to stay for the last two Harry Potter films. Daniel is also joins the cast for a new movie called My Boy Jack.

    After almost an entire month of promotional projects for December Boys and completing filming on My Boy Jack, Daniel finds himself back on the Harry Potter set. Hermone-She worked at the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, fighting for the improvement of the lives of house-elves. She later moved to the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, where she made sure pro-pureblood laws were stamped out.

Ginny-played for the Quidditch team Holyhead Harpies for a few years, then retired afterwards to become the Senior Quidditch Correspondent for the Daily Prophet.
